The congregation started life under James Brooke at Tower House and Tower Hall in Crouch Hill, London. This was the UAFC’s centre for conferences, training and missions to Africa for many years. In 1971 the congregation moved to its present location in Wightman Road. A great deal of Christian literature, much of it for the mission field, used to be published and printed by the associated Evangel Press Growing autonomy of the African church, the closure of the printing press, and the visionary leadership of Brendan Munro, led to a new direction for the Gospel Centre in the 1990s. Many initiatives affecting the borough (Haringey) were spearheaded by Brendan and his teams. As a result the Gospel Centre today is an amazing multi-cultural congregation that remains connected to a wealth of different initiatives in the community.
The enabling environment that has developed over the last two decades, and an emphasis on discipleship and Christian character as a basis for ministry, has resulted in an active congregation that gets stuck in and “does stuff.” Some of this happens internally, but much occurs in co-operation with other congregations and organizations.
Current Initiatives include:
Life (Cell) Groups, Discipleship and Leader Development, Church Plants (Milton Keynes and Harlow/Epping), English School (an outreach to the many foreigners in the borough), Winter Shelter for the homeless, a variety of Counseling ministries including Choices Haringey (crisis pregnancy-related.) Our women, children and youth ministry departments are experiencing revival, which is very exciting.
